What They Say:

An External View of the Course ...

I am Dr Jane Jones, and I have been Head of MFL Teacher Education at King’s College London for some time. My research interests are languages, assessment and teacher development. In the light of the latter, it has been my great pleasure to have been External Examiner for the Master of Teaching (MTeach) at UCL-IOE for the past 5 years. Over the five years, I have become very familiar with the course and assert that It is without doubt one of the best Masters’ degrees for teachers and the best in London of its type. It is unique in the way that it is developmental, mirroring the natural pace of learning on the course and respecting the rhythms of teachers working lives as they engage with M level work from their very first steps up until the final extended piece of work. This is very important for very busy teachers who need to find the time and space for their study. The assignments begin with short critical reflections and build up to the more challenging pieces of work. I have seen how teachers develop their skills and knowledge as well as their confidence over the course. It is very satisfying to be able to grow in this way. I have enjoyed all the assignments that I have read but the final ones really do attest to the student learning, sense of progression and their agency. Research is a strong focus, in engaging with existing research and in making a small contribution with one’s own research projects to the bigger picture. Students are critical reflectors on their practice and develop as pioneers of transformation and change.

The student intake is very diverse and this diversity is reflected in the course content, styles of teaching and general cultural sensitivity that I have seen being afforded to all students as individuals. The tutors are very caring, supportive and knowledgeable in their field. The assignments relate to personal interests and needs. Feedback from tutors is excellent, helpful and formative. The course leadership and organisation are excellent as is communication overall. The delivery is a blended teaching approach that is adaptable and flexible according to needs to enable all students to fulfil their potential. With the world class institutional framework of UCL, its global outreaching and its collegiality, the MTeach is ideally placed to provide a high quality learning experience and qualification. I have seen hundreds of students happily graduate over the years from this course and become active agents of change and innovation in education in their fields and in their own practice. I wish all new students joining the course the very best and I know you will enjoy the experience.

Very best wishes.
